As the temperature drops, summer clothes move to the back of the wardrobe and winter coats, scarves and boots return. Some people dread the change. Others have been waiting for an excuse to bring out their favourite coat.
Winter can be difficult. The mornings are colder, daylight is shorter, and getting from the car to the front door sometimes becomes a race. Still, is there room to enjoy the season while acknowledging its inconveniences?
The pleasure of dressing for the cold
There is something satisfying about putting together a winter outfit: a well-fitting coat, comfortable boots with good grip, a scarf that brings everything together, perhaps a beret or a favourite hat. Clothes that spent months in storage suddenly have their moment again.
For some, dressing well in winter is a small pleasure during a gloomy season. For others, comfort and warmth matter much more than style, especially on icy mornings or during long commutes. Often, a good winter wardrobe needs to do both.
A season of small discoveries
Looking forward to winter does not have to mean loving every snowfall. It might be the return of a favourite sweater, a warm drink after being outside, an evening spent indoors with good company or the familiar feeling of pulling on a scarf before heading out.
There is also something practical about rediscovering what is already in the wardrobe. Does last year’s coat still fit? Are the boots comfortable and suitable for slippery conditions? Can familiar pieces be combined differently instead of buying everything new?
The weather is not always negotiable, but the little pleasures people find in a season can be. What is one thing that makes winter feel a little more welcoming?
