When Work Ends but the Day Does Not

1–2 minutes

For some people, work ends in the afternoon. For others, it ends late at night or early in the morning. The hours vary, but there can still be plenty waiting when someone gets home.

A difficult conversation from work may linger. So can a colleague’s kind gesture, a thank-you note or a moment of appreciation that made the shift feel worthwhile.

Then comes the familiar question about dinner. The fridge may be full of food, yet someone announces that there is nothing to eat. Apparently the meals prepared over the weekend have become invisible.

People settle after work in different ways. Some need quiet, music or a walk. Others enjoy a conversation with someone they trust. Responsibilities and circumstances can make that transition easier for some than for others.

When does a busy day finally leave room for a moment that belongs to the person who has been looking after everyone else?
